Facility managers facilitate change
Creating Sustainable Spaces: Partnering with IFMA for Conservation and Innovation
In September 2023, the International Facilities Managers Association (IFMA) released a white paper identifying six target areas for innovation and growth. Three of those areas—contending with climate change, ESG reporting, and wellness and well-being—immediately aligned with the mission of Lights Out Northeast Florida (LONF). Facility managers play a pivotal role in decisions about office lighting, landscaping, and wellness initiatives, making them powerful allies in conservation efforts.
Hosting a Conversation in the Right Environment
Recognizing an opportunity to inspire change, LONF strategically hosted the local IFMA leadership at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. This casual setting provided the perfect backdrop to discuss conservation issues and showcase bird-friendly solutions, such as lighting adjustments and bird-safe window treatments.
Wins for Facility Managers and the Environment
The conversation centered on actionable steps that benefit both the environment and facility managers’ operations:
Dimming nonessential lights during migratory months saves money, reduces energy consumption, and minimizes light pollution—improving health for all species.
Replacing manicured landscapes with native plants reduces water usage, pesticide reliance, and maintenance costs, while also supporting local ecosystems.
Adding outdoor spaces and walking trails enhances employee wellness and creates healthier habitats.
Bird-safe window treatments prevent glass collisions, ensuring harmonious coexistence between buildings and wildlife.
These practical, cost-effective strategies resonated strongly with the IFMA leaders, sparking ideas for implementation in their own facilities.
Expanding the Conversation
Following our meeting, the local IFMA leaders invited LONF to host a table at one of their chapter events. To prepare, I created tailored materials designed specifically for facility managers, highlighting the intersection of environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. The event generated lively conversations and significant interest in LONF’s mission, strengthening our relationship with this influential group.
Building Momentum for Change
This partnership with IFMA underscores the importance of aligning conservation goals with organizational priorities like cost savings, wellness, and ESG reporting. By showing how small changes—like dimming lights or planting native vegetation—can deliver big wins, we’re helping facility managers create sustainable, wildlife-friendly spaces.
As we continue collaborating with IFMA and their network, we’re excited to inspire more decision-makers to embrace innovations that protect migratory birds, conserve resources, and support healthier ecosystems.
Below are materials I created for the local IFMA Chapter event.
