Shining a Light on Sustainability: A Partnership with a Local ESG Team

When a local Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) team reached out to Lights Out Northeast Florida (LONF), we saw an exciting opportunity to collaborate on two shared goals: reducing artificial light pollution and engaging employees in meaningful environmental action. With the sustainability director, environmental director, and manager of corporate citizenship at the table, this partnership promised to make a significant impact on both awareness and action.

Educating and Engaging Leaders

Understanding the importance of tailoring the message to the audience, I prepared a presentation that went beyond the usual focus on migratory birds. While discussing the detrimental effects of artificial light on birds, I expanded the conversation to include other species—humans included. This multi-faceted approach covered:

  • Costs: The financial toll of unnecessary lighting is staggering, with billions of dollars wasted annually on light that shines into the sky instead of where it’s needed.

  • Energy Consumption: Excess lighting often relies on fossil fuels, contributing to carbon emissions and climate change.

  • Human Health: Unnatural light at night disrupts our circadian rhythms, affects hormone production, and even suppresses the immune system.

  • Non-human Health: From disrupting migration to altering mating and hunting behaviors, artificial light at night negatively impacts countless species and destabilizes ecosystems.

This comprehensive discussion resonated deeply with the ESG team, strengthening their understanding of the broader implications of light pollution.

Empowering Employee Action

In addition to the presentation, the team expressed interest in providing volunteer opportunities for their employees. They requested a volunteer information packet to help recruit employees for LONF’s initiatives. Realizing we didn’t yet have a formal packet, I quickly developed one tailored to their needs and shared it with our contacts.

A Meaningful Win

The result? Two new volunteer route walkers joined our team! This was a big victory for LONF, as volunteer recruitment is one of our biggest challenges. With around 30 volunteers needed each season to collect data, finding dedicated individuals willing to commit to this vital work is never easy.

Looking Ahead

This partnership illustrates the power of collaboration with sustainability-focused organizations. By combining education with actionable opportunities, we not only raised awareness about the far-reaching effects of artificial light pollution but also gained enthusiastic new volunteers to further our mission.

Together, we’re proving that small, intentional changes—like turning off unnecessary lights—can create brighter futures for migratory birds, ecosystems, and the planet as a whole.
